Liberal leader Sussan Ley faced intense scrutiny from the Canberra press as speculation grows that her tenure as leader might be coming to an end.
The pressure escalated after comments from within the party raised doubts about her control, especially following statements from Senator Sarah Henderson.
“I could not support things the way they are,” said Senator Henderson, expressing that Ms. Ley was “losing support” within the party.
At a press conference in Canberra, Ms. Ley was asked directly if her “days leading the party were numbered” while she focused on criticizing the Albanese government over the cost of living crisis.
However, Ms. Ley refused to engage with the rumors, stating she would not “comment on commentary” and emphasizing pride in her team representing Australian values.
When asked about Senator Henderson's remarks, Ms. Ley did not mention her by name, saying:
“I value every single member of my team including the good Senator that you’ve just mentioned. In order to interrogate her view, you should probably ask her.”
Ms. Ley claimed the team was concentrating on resolving the net zero emissions target, even though this issue appears to deepen divisions between moderates and conservatives within the party.
Author’s summary: Sussan Ley faces growing leadership pressure as internal disputes and public doubts intensify, especially over party support and climate policy disagreements.
