As Remembrance Day approaches, communities across Canada are preparing to honour the men and women who have served and continue to serve to protect the nation’s peace and freedom. Niagara-on-the-Lake is no exception, with tributes appearing throughout the town.
Local businesses have begun offering poppies, which residents proudly wear on their jackets and shirts. Poppy displays can be seen at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, the Historic Court House, the RiverBrink Art Museum, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124 on King Street.
The museum’s annual poppy campaign started in October, with staff placing 75 poppy wreaths across the heritage district as a visible tribute to veterans.
“We accept donations at that time for our poppy trust fund to support veterans and their families,” said Al Howse, president of the Legion.
Howse added that Legion members have been busy preparing for commemorative events. Their poppy drive, which began on October 11, has seen Legion members collecting donations and distributing thousands of poppies across town. Around 200 local businesses are taking part in the campaign.
A series of ceremonies and community gatherings will take place throughout Niagara-on-the-Lake leading up to and on November 11, as residents unite in remembrance of those who served in the First World War, Second World War, and later conflicts.
