Review: 'Zelda' spin-off 'Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment' is as brainless as it is cathartic

Review: "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment" — Brainless but Cathartic

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment feels like Tears of Kingdom fan fiction designed for adrenaline seekers. Despite its predictable story and formulaic gameplay, its cooperative mode and stylish presentation make it enjoyable.

Released on Thursday, the game is not subtle. It offers a familiar plot paired with impressive animation. While I have rarely connected with the "musou" genre, this title refreshes my tired mind like a cool breeze.

Departure from Classic Zelda

Unlike the traditional Legend of Zelda series, especially the Nintendo Switch versions praised for exploration and puzzles, Hyrule Warriors spin-offs focus purely on combat. They amplify the action, trading the franchise’s thoughtful design for explosive battles and flashy special moves.

“Hyrule Warriors” spinoff games abandon everything but the last part of that trifecta. They dial the action up to 11, sacrificing nearly everything thoughtful about the franchise on the altar of bombastic fights and dazzling special attacks.

Perfect for Sleep-Deprived Players

As a new father, short, intense sessions of four to twenty minutes in Age of Imprisonment fit better into my hectic schedule than more demanding games like Hollow Knight: Silksong. Although it offers little in terms of story or surprises, it delivers quick bursts of enjoyable chaos.

Comparison to Other Games

Rather than aligning closely with the iconic Zelda series, Age of Imprisonment shares more similarities with horde-based action games like Vampire Survivors. In essence, it feels like fan fiction.

“Age of Imprisonment” may as well be fan fiction.

Its appeal lies in providing a cathartic outlet through nonstop action rather than narrative depth.

Author’s Summary

This spin-off offers fast-paced, stylish combat perfect for brief play sessions, balancing brainless fun with satisfying action but little story depth.
