Residents in the Moss Park area regained electricity after an outage that began at 8:11 a.m. Wednesday and was resolved by 1 p.m. Thursday, according to Toronto Hydro.
"Power has now been restored to all customers. We sincerely thank everyone for your patience as our crews worked through these extensive and complex repairs," Toronto Hydro stated on social media.
The outage affected nearly 600 customers within the Moss Park area, spanning from Queen Street E. and Jarvis Street to Parliament Street and Front Street E. Initially, over 1,000 customers were affected early Wednesday morning.
Toronto Hydro counts customers by meters, which may underrepresent the number of people impacted. Spokesperson Brie Davis explained in an email:
“In some cases, condos and buildings are fed by a single bulk meter. Because of this, our outage map reflects one meter as one customer, even though many residents may be impacted.”
Crews identified the cause of the outage as a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site, which damaged Toronto Hydro’s infrastructure.
“The work that caused the dig-in is unrelated to Toronto Hydro but resulted in damage to our infrastructure. Repairing this damage required our crews to excavate 14 feet underground in order to access the impacted area,” Davis said.
Initially, restoration was expected by 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, but extensive underground repair prolonged the outage.
Nearly 600 customers in Moss Park had power restored after a complex outage caused by third-party construction damage, highlighting challenges in urban infrastructure repair.
