Chief Nurse Issues Flu Jab SOS Appeal
England’s chief nursing officer has made an urgent call for everyone eligible for a flu vaccination to secure their appointment before the peak of the flu season arrives. The appeal follows recent warnings that this year’s flu outbreak started unusually early, with record infection rates among children and young adults.
“It’s only weeks before the worst of the flu season typically hits. Those eligible should book their vaccination as soon as possible.”
NHS England announced that 2.4 million additional vaccination slots will open next week to meet growing demand. The flu vaccine is available to:
- People aged 65 and over
- Under-65s in clinical risk groups
- Residents of care homes
- Carers and pregnant women
- Close contacts of immunosuppressed individuals
- Frontline health and social care workers
- Children eligible through the national immunization program
According to NHS England, more than 13 million vaccines have already been administered since the rollout began in September. Currently, three in five care home residents—around 59.4%—have been vaccinated, and 2.3 million eligible children have received their flu shots.
