Harvard Native American Program Celebrates 55 Years
Harvard University has a long-standing commitment to educating Indigenous students, dating back to its inception.
The Harvard University Native American Program, which marks its 55th anniversary, has proposed a new headquarters on Mount Auburn Street.
A drum featuring an Indigenous turtle design with the Harvard seal serves as the program's symbol.
The college's charter of 1650 states that the purpose of its founding is "the education of the English & Indian Youth of this Country in knowledge: and godlines[s]."
- From 1655 to 1698, the "Indian College" stood on the site now occupied by Matthews Hall.
- Caleb Cheeshahteaumuck of the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah was the first graduate in 1665.
