City Section football playoffs: Can Birmingham Charter get back to the top?

After winning three straight L.A. City Section Open Division titles from 2021 to 2023, Birmingham Charter’s run was halted by Narbonne in last year’s semifinals. The Patriots’ 48-game win streak against City Section opponents—surpassing the record of 39 set by L.A. Wilson in 1978—was broken in that loss.

However, Narbonne’s title was later vacated due to CIF violations involving ineligible players, forcing the team to forfeit its wins. As a result, Birmingham’s record was technically restored, keeping the historic streak alive.

Now, under coach Jim Rose, Birmingham Charter enters this season’s Open Division playoffs as the No. 2 seed and a leading contender for the championship. The Patriots’ current streak stands at 54 consecutive victories over City teams.

Their postseason journey begins at home against the No. 7 seed Cougars, who are making their first-ever Open Division appearance. The Patriots aim to advance to the Open final, scheduled for November 29 at L.A. Southwest College.

“The streak isn’t just about numbers; it’s about legacy and consistency,” said coach Jim Rose.
