Veteran center David Kampf has temporarily stepped away from the AHL's Toronto Marlies to evaluate his future. During the offseason, the Maple Leafs sought a new destination for Kampf, but no trade materialized. Consequently, he was waived during training camp and, after going unclaimed, assigned to the Toronto Marlies.
General Manager Brad Treliving signed Kampf, now 30, to a four-year, $9.6 million contract just over two years ago. At that time, the expectation was for him to anchor the fourth line, excel at faceoffs, and contribute on the penalty kill.
However, under coach Craig Berube last season, Kampf's role diminished, with lower-cost players now filling his roster spot. This season, he appeared in only four of seven games with the Marlies and did not play in the recent road game in Chicago.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the veteran is taking a few days to consider his future.
Recently, several players have left guaranteed contracts aiming for better NHL opportunities or a return to the league. Names such as Conor Sheary, Brandon Saad, and Filip Zadina have followed similar paths. Kampf may be considering this option, despite potentially forfeiting over $3 million owed from his current and next season salary plus the signing bonus.
David Kampf is reflecting on his career path after a reduced role in the AHL, weighing the possibility of leaving guaranteed money to pursue better NHL opportunities.
