Several individuals fell ill at Joint Base Andrews, a U.S. military installation near Washington, after a suspicious package containing an unknown white powder was delivered and opened.
According to CNN, the package was opened inside a building that also houses the Air National Guard Readiness Center. Following the incident, the building and an adjacent connected structure were evacuated as a precaution, and a cordon was set up around the area.
“As a precaution, the building and connecting building (at the base) were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,” Joint Base Andrews stated.
First responders were dispatched promptly to assess the situation. Several people who fell ill were taken to the Malcolm Grove Medical Center located on the base. The responders found no immediate threat and handed the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations, which is currently leading the investigation.
“Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and have turned the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations. An investigation is currently ongoing," CNN reported.
The source of the white powder and the cause of the illnesses remain under investigation.
