Toronto Maple Leafs centre David Kampf is currently away from the team, reflecting on his future after beginning the season in the American Hockey League (AHL). At 30 years old, Kampf was waived at the start of the season and sent to the Toronto Marlies, the Leafs' AHL affiliate.
Kampf has appeared in four games with the Marlies, contributing one assist in that span. TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston indicated on the Thursday edition of Insider Trading that a decision regarding Kampf's status might be announced by the weekend.
“They’ve got a lot of forwards up and down the organization, and one whose status has been a little bit unclear in the last week is David Kampf. He’s been away from the Toronto Marlies, pondering his future, what he wants to do next. I’m told that could be coming to a resolution by this weekend. Could even see Kampf rejoin the Marlies. We’ll see what happens there.”
Kampf is in the third year of a four-year contract worth $9.6 million, with an annual average value (AAV) of $2.4 million. An undrafted free agent, he initially signed a two-year entry-level deal with the Chicago Blackhawks in May 2017, where he played four seasons before joining the Maple Leafs on a two-year contract in 2021.
After scoring 26 and 27 points in his first two seasons in Toronto, Kampf signed a four-year extension in June 2023. However, he faced challenges in the 2024-25 season, his first under head coach Craig Berube, recording five goals and 13 points in 59 games while averaging a career-low 12 minutes and 24 seconds on ice per game.
David Kampf’s demotion to the AHL has led him to reconsider his role and future with the Maple Leafs as the team works toward a resolution on his status.
