Edie Falco, celebrated for her Emmy-winning performances in The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie, expressed her interest in taking on a female superhero role, describing it as an enjoyable new challenge.
Falco thrives on portraying nuanced and layered characters, stating she has never encountered a role she couldn’t manage. She said,
“Never have I said I can’t do that. You sort of find a way you can go and see, because you’re able to know you have to stop before it is dangerous. And I’ve been in therapy for 7,000 years.”
She added, “I look for those [complicated characters]. That’s what makes this exciting. To play someone with a less complicated life is less interesting.”
At 62, Falco feels fortunate to have portrayed a diverse range of complex female characters throughout her work. Reflecting on the evolving roles for women in television, she shared,
“I’ve been very lucky that kind of since I started working, female characters are getting more interesting and complicated, I feel like I’m riding this wave of really interesting and complicated female characters.”
She also noted the advantage of avoiding early typecasting, saying, “I imagine if you’re only ever playing young, beautiful, sexy women, it’s going to get harder as you get older.”
Looking forward, Falco expressed curiosity about portraying political figures, joking,
“Maybe I can get something out of my system.”
Edie Falco seeks to expand her career by embracing new challenges like female superheroes and political roles, driven by her passion for complex character portrayals.
