Lindsay Sandiford, a British grandmother freed from death row in Bali, is reportedly flying back to the UK today after spending 13 years in prison. At 69 years old, she is being repatriated under an agreement between the UK and Indonesia.
Sandiford is scheduled to leave Bali this afternoon on a 20-hour flight with a brief layover before arriving at Heathrow Airport. She is described as “seriously ill” and has been examined by a doctor from the British consulate in Bali.
Sandiford communicated through a pastor supporting her case, expressing gratitude for the second chance to reunite with her family in England after spending 12 years facing execution for drug smuggling.
“We are deeply grateful for the courageous compassion shown by President Prabowo Subianto and the Indonesian government in their commitment to repatriate Lindsay Sandiford on humanitarian grounds. After 13 years, she is keen to be back home with her family. She will forever be grateful for this second chance.”
This statement was shared by Rev. Christie Buckingham, a pastor from Bayside Church in Melbourne, who has supported Sandiford throughout her ordeal and is currently in Indonesia.
Yusril Ihza Mahendra, senior Indonesian minister for legal affairs, confirmed Sandiford’s health status and the repatriation arrangement.
