British Death Row Drug Mule Gran Released from Prison

With her face buried in her hand, 69-year-old grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was seen at a handover ceremony at Kerobokan Prison in Bali. She has spent over a decade on death row in Indonesia as a British drug mule.

Sandiford, convicted of smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine into Bali, was transferred from prison to the airport today as she prepares to return home after being spared the firing squad. She is expected to board a UK-funded flight after 13 years in custody.

Her ticket reportedly cost £600, and she is due to arrive at London Heathrow after a 20-hour journey. Officials revealed Sandiford, a former legal secretary, is seriously ill and eager to reunite with her family in Britain.

'More than a decade in one of the world's worst prisons has taken its toll on her and she wants nothing more than to get back to the UK.'

Sandiford left the prison this afternoon accompanied by another British inmate, 35-year-old Shabab Shahabadi, serving a life sentence for drug offences. Officials noted Shahabadi was also unwell.

Both were driven to Denpasar International Airport to be handed over to British Ambassador Dominic Jeremy before boarding their flight.

Summary: After 13 years on death row in Indonesia, seriously ill Lindsay Sandiford, convicted drug mule, has been released and is returning to the UK.
