Authorities in Stockport are investigating an arson incident that occurred near a war memorial just days before Remembrance Sunday. The fire was reported around 9:50 PM on Wednesday, 5 November, near the Cenotaph in Marple.
"This is an absolutely disgraceful act and will not be tolerated," said Marple North councillor Steve Gribbon.
Police Sergeant Rachel Walton from Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team stated: “This was a reckless act that could have ended with more damage and even serious injury. Police units arrived on scene within minutes, and the fire was quickly extinguished by colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service."
The police are collaborating with Stockport Council and the fire service to clean and restore the area. Marple neighbourhood officers are appealing for any information related to the incident.
The community has strongly condemned the act, emphasizing its dangerous and disrespectful nature ahead of a significant remembrance event.
