The helicopter that helped launch STARS finds a new home in Calgary

A retired STARS air ambulance helicopter has been relocated to The Hangar Flight Museum in Calgary. The Airbus BK117, which began service in 1985, was part of the original fleet that helped establish the non-profit air ambulance organization.

During its active years, the helicopter supported missions across Western Canada before being retired.

“Now, in our 40th year, this historic aircraft stands as a symbol of the remarkable contributions made by the community, for the community.”

More than 100 donors contributed to a fundraising campaign that raised over $900,000 for STARS operations. Their names are now displayed on the helicopter as a tribute.

The Hangar Flight Museum expressed its honour in a separate statement, calling the helicopter “an inspiring legacy” that will preserve the story of STARS for future generations.

Author’s summary: This historic helicopter, central to STARS’ beginnings and community efforts, now rests at a museum, preserving its mission legacy for years to come.
