American Legion Volunteers to Fly Flags for Veterans Day

It’s time once again to honor our nation’s colors — red, white, and blue — the enduring symbols of freedom and service that have represented the United States since June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress established the Flag Act. These colors have been carried into battle, flown above government buildings, schools, and cemeteries as a tribute to those who served.

LuAnn Jackson reads the symbolism of each fold while they fold the flag during a maintenance day to repair flags damaged by wind and weather at Graceland Cemetery.

This careful process is often repeated by American Legion members at schools to teach younger generations the meaning and respect that citizens and service members hold for the flag. Through these efforts, the traditions of respectful flag handling continue to live on.

Meaning of the Colors

In 1782, Secretary of the Continental Congress Charles Thomson explained that red represents valor and bravery, white signifies purity and innocence, and blue stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

These meanings reflect the spirit and patriotism that unite Americans, values that the flag continues to embody in every community gathering and national commemoration.

Veterans Day Tribute

This weekend, the colors will once again fly proudly thanks to the American Legion and local volunteers who dedicate their time to keeping the flags restored and displayed in honor of Veterans Day. Their efforts preserve not only the banners themselves but also the ideals and gratitude they represent.

Author’s Summary: Through restoration and ceremony, the American Legion and volunteers ensure the flag’s enduring presence symbolizes patriotism, respect, and national unity each Veterans Day.
