Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula advanced to the semifinals of the WTA Finals in Riyadh with straight-sets wins on Thursday.
The top-seeded Sabalenka ended Coco Gauff’s title defense, defeating the American 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 in the final round-robin match at King Saud University Indoor Arena. The Belarusian star finished with a flawless 3-0 record to lead the Stefanie Graf Group.
Jessica Pegula claimed the runner-up spot after a 6-2, 6-3 win over Italy’s eighth seed Jasmine Paolini. The results set up high-stakes semifinal encounters for both players.
“I’m super excited to face her in the semis,” said Sabalenka, who lost to Anisimova in the Wimbledon semifinals.
The match marked the 12th career meeting between Sabalenka and Gauff. Sabalenka twice came back from a one-break deficit to claim the tiebreak and take full control of the encounter.
Sabalenka and Pegula delivered commanding wins to reach the WTA Finals semifinals, where Sabalenka’s rematch with Anisimova promises an electrifying clash.
