Proceeds from the auctions are being donated to The Sameer Project, which provides aid to displaced families in Gaza, and to the Palestine Red Crescent Society.
Aicha Smith-Belghaba, who is Mohawk and Algerian and lives in Six Nations of the Grand River, is deeply affected as her grandmother enters palliative care. Despite her grief, she expresses gratitude and strength while preparing an auction to support Gaza.
“That’s a privilege people in Gaza often don’t have. Too many can’t hold funerals, can’t bury loved ones in peace. I keep thinking, ‘even in our pain here, we still have each other.’”
She shared this in a written statement to CBC Hamilton.
Smith-Belghaba met Natasha Kurd of Brantford4Palestine earlier this year and quickly joined efforts to organize a charity auction. The event launched on Friday and will continue through the weekend, featuring various items each day.
“This is simply the moment my capacity, our relationships, and the need [in Gaza] lined up,” she said.
In early October, Israel and Hamas agreed on a ceasefire that allowed aid trucks into Gaza two months after a UN report confirmed famine conditions. However, aid agencies report that very little assistance has actually reached Gaza.
