Councillors Seek Court Delay

Waikato Regional Council has requested additional time from the Environment Court to commission an updated economic impact assessment before a final decision is made on a proposed water quality plan change.

Four newly elected councillors — Garry Reymer, Liz Stolwyk, Gary McGuire, and Keith Holmes — along with second-term councillor Ben Dunbar-Smith, raised concerns that the plan known as Plan Change One might cost the region an estimated $5 billion.

"Plan Change One could cost the region $5 billion."

The plan aims to introduce comprehensive rules on agricultural land use to improve freshwater quality in the Waikato and Waipā river catchments. It will impact about 10,000 properties covering roughly 1.1 million hectares.

Following the motion at last week’s council meeting, council chief executive Chris McLay was instructed to direct legal counsel to request a two to three-month delay from the Environment Court to allow experts time to prepare a new economic study on the plan’s implementation.

"Farmers are being unfairly targeted," said Gary McGuire.
