Iraq’s Defence Minister, Thabit al-Abbasi, stated that he received an official message from U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth regarding forthcoming military operations inside Syrian territory.
“U.S. forces are carrying out missions in the region, specifically within Syrian territory.”
According to al-Abbasi, the U.S. message clearly warned that any participation by armed Iraqi militias in these operations would lead to serious repercussions.
In an interview with Al-Sharqiya television, al-Abbasi recalled his phone conversation with Secretary Hegseth, which took place about ten days earlier and lasted approximately eleven to twelve minutes. The Iraqi side included the Chief of Staff of the Army, the Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, the Assistant Commander of Operations, and the Director of Military Intelligence, reflecting the weight of the exchange.
Hegseth reportedly began the discussion by noting ongoing U.S. military missions in the region and cautioning Baghdad against interference by Iranian-backed armed factions.
The U.S. warned Iraq about its upcoming operations in Syria, urging Baghdad to restrain pro-Iranian militias from disrupting American military activities.
