Trump Envoy Says Wants Iraq Free of Iran’s ‘Malign’ Interference

Trump Envoy’s Mission to Iraq

US President Donald Trump’s newly appointed envoy to Iraq, Mark Savaya, has clarified the goals of his mission, sparking debate ahead of Iraq’s parliamentary elections on November 11.

Objectives for Iraq’s Stability

In a statement on the X platform, Savaya emphasized the importance of eliminating armed groups that operate independently of the Iraqi government. He stated:

“The United States Government has made it clear that there is no place for armed groups operating outside the authority of the state. Iraq’s stability and prosperity depend on having unified security forces under the command of a single government and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, united under one flag that represents all Iraqis. Without this unity, Iraq’s sovereignty and progress will remain at risk.”

Call for Sovereignty and Regional Peace

Savaya highlighted that Iraq’s independence from harmful external influences is critical for its people and the broader region:

“The interests of the Iraqi people and of the wider region depend on a fully sovereign Iraq, free from malign external interference, including from Iran and its proxies, and committed to serving its citizens and living in peace with its neighbors.”

He further stressed cooperation between federal and regional authorities as vital for Iraq’s lasting security, economic growth, and national unity.

Role of Iraq in the Region

Mark Savaya described Iraq as a key country that must foster regional peace and prevent a return to divisive policies that threaten progress:

“Iraq is a pivotal country in the region and must play its natural role in promoting regional peace, security, and stability. Iraq must not return to the past or adopt approaches that hinder progress and unity.”
Summary

Mark Savaya’s mission underlines the critical need for Iraq to unify its security forces, reject foreign interference, and foster cooperation to ensure sustainable peace and development.
