Allow Hilary Duff to Reintroduce Herself

Hilary Duff reflects on her evolving journey as an artist and the return to her musical roots after nearly a decade.

“I have the honor and joy of meaning so much to so many people during a very specific time in their lives,” says Duff. “But I’m ready to meet them again as the woman I am now.”

A Return to Music

Duff always believed she would return to music, even when fans started to lose faith. Her last studio album, Breathe In (2015), remains a beloved but underrated piece of her discography. Although her focus later shifted toward acting and family life with her husband, music producer Matthew Koma, she never completely stepped away from music.

At different points, she surprised her audience with musical cameos, such as recording a dubstep version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Little Lies” to promote the second season of her series Younger.

“Making music was a huge risk that I took at such a young age, and it was a huge part of my makeup for the longest time,” Duff tells Vogue. “It was hard to step away from it, but I always knew I would come back whenever the timing felt right.”

The Comeback

Now, at 38, Duff releases her new single Mature, marking her first project under Atlantic Records. The shimmering pop-rock track, created with Koma and songwriter Madison Love—who has worked with artists from Lady Gaga to Addison Rae—serves as an intimate reflection on self-growth.

She describes it as “a little conversation that my present self is having with my younger self.”
