On October 27, Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire sent a letter to Chancellor García outlining the Legislature’s expectations for the 2025–26 State Budget. The goal was to ensure that the funding supports the long-term recovery plan at Sonoma State University.
Faculty and leadership members of the California Faculty Association at Sonoma State encouraged McGuire to act after concerns arose about potential misallocation of funds by the Chancellor’s Office.
McGuire’s letter referred to $45 million appropriated in the 2025–26 State Budget to strengthen and stabilize Sonoma State’s critical programs. It also mentioned an additional $5 million intended to help campuses facing low enrollment. In August 2025, the Chancellor’s Office pledged another $45 million to Sonoma State, supplementing the earlier allocation.
“The Legislature is committed to ensuring that the allocated resources directly support the institution’s academic mission, enrollment and student success.” — Senator Mike McGuire
Senator McGuire demanded accountability and transparency in Sonoma State’s budget process to ensure funds empower faculty-led academic progress and student achievement.
