New Institute for Bioethics Excites Students and Faculty

A University institute that merges health and law disciplines is evolving into the new Institute for Bioethics. Located in Scaife Hall, it continues the work of the former Center for Bioethics and Health Law (CBHL), which explored ethical, legal, and policy issues in health sciences.

This new institute will maintain the responsibilities of its predecessor, while enhancing bioethics awareness through research opportunities and courses. It aims to unite faculty and students from diverse fields, including humanities and law, to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

Interdisciplinary Approach and Leadership

Lisa Parker, former director of CBHL and current director of the Center for Research Ethics within the Institute, shared her enthusiasm for the institute’s growth.

“We will use methods of analysis that are common to not only bioethics and philosophy, but to the broader field of health humanities,” Parker said.

Douglas White, the inaugural director of the Institute for Bioethics, highlighted that this development is more than a simple rebranding.

“This is not a renaming,” White emphasized. “The Institute will continue the efforts of the CBHL.”

The expanded institute will focus on training students and scholars to better support medical patients through ethical reflection and practical guidance.

Goals and Future Directions

The institute represents a forward step in advancing bioethical scholarship and practical ethical training within the university community.

“The Institute will continue the efforts of the CBHL,” White concluded.

Author’s summary: The new Institute for Bioethics builds on the previous center’s mission with a broader interdisciplinary focus, enhancing education and research to better serve health ethics challenges.
