Lucy Liu has unveiled her shortest haircut in years, embracing a chic lob style just above the collarbone. The actress revealed her new look while promoting her upcoming drama Rosemead, where she stars in a leading role.
The Charlie's Angels alum showcases this transformation in the film’s trailer, featuring a side-parted cut that frames her face elegantly. Rosemead premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June and is set for theatrical release on December 5.
Rosemead tells the story of Irene (played by Liu) and her son Joe (Lawrence Shou) as they navigate life following his schizophrenia diagnosis. The movie is based on a 2017 Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong titled "A dying mother’s plan: Buy a gun. Kill her son."
“As there was not a lot that was known about this family, the script had to be pieced together,” Liu told Variety. “In some ways, it’s a little bit of a thriller, because people know the final act and some of the details, and then the rest had to be kind of filled in, in order to understand the dynamic between Irene and her son.”
This dramatic role signals a significant shift for Liu, who is best known for more lighthearted and action-oriented work in series and films such as Ally McBeal, Watching the Detectives, and Why Women Kill.
During the Tribeca Film Festival premiere, Liu shared in an interview with Parade that projects like Rosemead allow her to explore deeper and more complex emotional narratives, expanding her range as both performer and storyteller.
Author’s Summary: Lucy Liu’s new short haircut coincides with her powerful turn in Rosemead, a film exploring the fragile bond between a mother and her son facing mental illness.
