Lucy Liu has entered her lob era with a sleek new cut, first revealed in the trailer for the upcoming drama Rosemead. The Charlie's Angels alum now sports a short, side-parted hairstyle that falls just above her collarbone, marking her shortest look in years.
Rosemead premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June and is scheduled for theatrical release on December 5. The story follows Irene (played by Liu) and her son Joe (Lawrence Shou) as they cope with his schizophrenia diagnosis. The film is inspired by a 2017 Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong titled "A dying mother's plan: Buy a gun. Kill her son."
Known for her dynamic performances in Ally McBeal, Watching the Detectives, and Why Women Kill, Liu takes a distinctly different path with Rosemead, showing her range beyond action and comedy.
“As there was not a lot that was known about this family, the script had to be pieced together,” Liu told Variety. “In some ways, it’s a little bit of a thriller, because people know the final act and some of the details, and then the rest had to be kind of filled in, in order to understand the dynamic between Irene and her son.”
During the film's Tribeca premiere, Liu shared her continuing interest in taking on emotionally complex and socially charged roles, hinting at a deepening commitment to serious dramatic storytelling.
Author’s summary: Lucy Liu showcases a daring new haircut and a dramatic career turn in Rosemead, a film exploring maternal love, mental illness, and moral struggle.
