"This is the way it is": How Ita Is Coping with a Life-Changing Condition

Ita, 83, remains positive despite facing uncertainty after being diagnosed with isolated gait disorder following back surgery in 2021. Although she hasn’t walked properly since the operation, she emphasizes the importance of staying active and maintaining a hopeful outlook.

"I haven't walked properly since the back surgery."

Doctors are unsure if her back surgery triggered the condition or if it will worsen. Ita now uses a wheelchair and depends on others for mobility, which she sees as an adjustment rather than a setback.

"I'm dependent on other people to help me get around and that's one of the adjustments."

Rather than focus on what she has lost, Ita chooses to appreciate the absence of back pain and the chance to take control of her life as she always has.

"I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have."

She acknowledges frustration, especially about limited funding for research into her condition.

"Life is full of detours."

Despite challenges, Ita recently completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, her second memoir and the first written without balancing a full-time job. She found joy in writing without interruptions.

"It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do."

Her story highlights resilience and the power of a positive mindset.

Author’s summary: Ita’s story shows how adapting with optimism and pursuing passions can bring strength despite life’s unexpected challenges and uncertainties.
