After two exhibition games serving as tune-ups, coach Jeff Capel's revamped Pitt basketball team faced Youngstown State at the Petersen Events Center for their season opener. Youngstown State, projected to finish fourth in the Horizon League, challenged the Panthers early on.
The Penguins led initially and narrowed the gap to four points midway through the second half. However, Pitt pulled away behind Cam Corhen’s standout performance to secure a 74-59 victory.
Corhen led both teams with 23 points on 8 of 12 shooting, paired with 12 rebounds, posting a double-double.
“It’s great to get a win in our first game,” Capel said. “That’s a really good team that we beat, a team that’s going to have a chance to win their league. … I thought we settled into the game defensively, made things difficult for them and that got us going a little bit offensively.”
Supporting Corhen, Brandin Cummings contributed 18 points, while Nojus Indrusaitis added 13 points off the bench. Pitt collectively shot 43.4% (23 of 53) from the field and dominated the boards, outrebounding Youngstown State 46-24.
Pitt’s first basket came early when Cummings hit a three-pointer from the top of the key, cutting Youngstown State’s lead to 7-3 about three minutes into the game. The Panthers initially trailed as Youngstown State increased its advantage to 14-6 following an alley-oop by Imanuel Zorgvol with 14:31 left before halftime.
Author's summary: Cam Corhen’s dominant double-double sparked Pitt to a solid season-opening 74-59 win over a tough Youngstown State team, highlighted by strong defense and rebounding.
