Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, revealed that the company might need to construct a massive chip manufacturing facility to produce artificial intelligence (AI) chips. During Tesla’s annual meeting, he suggested the possibility of working with Intel on these chips.
“You know, maybe we’ll, we’ll do something with Intel. We haven’t signed any deal, but it’s probably worth having discussions with Intel.”
Tesla is currently developing its fifth-generation AI chip to support its autonomous driving goals. The company is also collaborating with Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung on the chip production.
Intel owns chip fabrication plants but has fallen behind Nvidia in the AI chip market. Recently, the US government acquired a 10% stake in Intel, which now seeks external customers for its advanced manufacturing technology.
Following Musk’s comments, Intel’s stock price rose by 4%.
Tesla shareholders approved an unprecedented $1 trillion compensation plan for Musk over the next ten years, endorsing his strategy to transform Tesla into a leader in AI and robotics.
The AI chips being developed feed Tesla’s autonomous driving systems, including the Full Self-Driving software. Currently, Tesla uses its fourth-generation chip in production.
Summary: Elon Musk plans to expand Tesla’s AI chip production, potentially partnering with Intel, as shareholders back his ambitious vision to advance Tesla in AI and robotics.
