Menefee Advances to Runoff for Houston-Based CD-18

Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee and former Houston City Councilmember Amanda Edwards have advanced to a runoff in the special election for the 18th Congressional District seat, previously held by the late U.S. Representative Sylvester Turner.

With all votes tallied, Menefee led a crowded field of 16 candidates, securing about 29% of the vote. Edwards followed closely with nearly 26%, both Democrats, which ensures the district will remain under Democratic control.

No candidate reached the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff. Jolanda Jones of Houston placed third with around 19% support.

"Menefee led the 16-candidate field with about 29% of the vote, followed by Edwards at nearly 26%."

The runoff, scheduled for early next year, means the 18th District seat will stay vacant for several more months. The winner will complete Turner’s term but must run again in the 2026 election for a full two-year term.

"The winner of the runoff is only guaranteed the seat through the end of 2026, given that the office is immediately up for reelection next year."

Once seated, the new representative will reduce the narrow majority held by House Republicans.
