Dave Doeren shuts down any retirement speculation at NC State

Dave Doeren Addresses Retirement Rumors at NC State

For most of Dave Doeren’s 13-year tenure at NC State, the football program has demonstrated consistent, if modest, success. Since taking the head coaching job in 2013, NC State has won between seven and nine games in all but one season from 2014 to 2023, never surpassing nine wins. Each of those nine-win seasons resulted in AP Top 25 rankings.

Despite coming close, the Wolfpack have never qualified for the ACC Championship Game, finishing just one game short and never making the trip from Raleigh to Charlotte for the title match.

This steady performance under Doeren mirrors common coaching scenarios where moderate success can eventually lead to changes. For example, Georgia replaced Mark Richt with Kirby Smart and improved, while Minnesota fired Glen Mason after multiple bowl appearances and experienced less success afterward.

"I'm having a blast," Doeren said on ESPN's Inside ACCess podcast. "I have four years left on my contract, I fully expect to coach in. So unless they kick me out of here, I'm going to keep coming to work and doing everything I can to help NC State."

Doeren expresses his commitment to the program and personal motivation, stating that there's still important work ahead for both him and the team.
