The Wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth II Gets Its Largest Outing Yet

The Wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth II: A Nine-Decade Retrospective

The extensive wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth II, spanning nine decades, is showcased at Buckingham Palace in a major exhibition featuring 200 pieces, from her wedding gown to a clear plastic raincoat. English designers play a prominent role in the collection.

Queen Elizabeth II and the 1960 Royal Wedding

Choosing an outfit for a sibling's wedding is challenging, but for Queen Elizabeth II, the pressure was immense. The 1960 wedding of her sister, Princess Margaret, to photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones was televised, watched by an estimated 300 million people across the Commonwealth.

Elizabeth, queen for seven years at that time, commissioned British designer Norman Hartnell, who had created her own wedding dress, to design her ensemble. Hartnell produced a light blue gown with a crinoline skirt and a bolero jacket. The queen complemented this look with gloves, a fabric rose hat, and pearls.

“An image of Elizabeth, steady and devoted to her family and to the British people, prevailed.”

Renowned British photographer Cecil Beaton captured the queen in this iconic outfit, emphasizing her poised and caring presence.
