A woman and a child drowned after falling into Dandenong Creek near Allan Street this afternoon.
According to a witness, the two were swept away at around 3:45 pm. It is believed the woman tried to help the child but got into trouble herself.
Police searched the area, found both unconscious, and pulled them from the water. Emergency services began CPR immediately.
Despite their efforts, the woman and child could not be revived and were declared deceased at the scene.
The identities of the victims have not been confirmed. Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
