On 31 October 2025, Anduril Australia officially opened its new Ghost Shark factory in Sydney. The 7,400m² facility will produce advanced underwater vessels for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
The opening ceremony was attended by Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy and Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Mark Hammond. The event coincided with the unveiling of the first series-produced Ghost Shark extra-large autonomous underwater vehicle (XLAUV), ahead of its scheduled delivery.
This development follows just seven weeks after the RAN awarded Anduril an A$1.7 billion (US$1.1 billion) contract for a fleet of Ghost Shark vessels. The first unit is now ready for in-water trials and is expected to be delivered to the RAN by January 2026. Additional XLAUVs will be produced over the next five years.
“The Ghost Shark is the most high-tech, long-range autonomous underwater capability that exists in the world today….” — Pat Conroy, Minister for Defence Industry
Conroy highlighted the project as a prime example of effective collaboration between government, Defence, and innovative industry partners to quickly equip the warfighter with cutting-edge technology.
Before this contract, Anduril Australia co-developed and produced three Ghost Shark prototypes under a three-year A$140 million (US$92 million) agreement.
Anduril Australia’s new factory marks a significant leap in autonomous underwater vehicle production, advancing the RAN’s capabilities through a landmark government-industry partnership.
