Nevada Senators Cross Party Lines to End Shutdown

The Senate moved forward on Sunday with a plan to end the ongoing government shutdown after a group of moderate Democrats — including Nevada senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto — decided to support advancing the measure despite lacking a guarantee on extending health care subsidies.

The initial test vote, which passed 60–40, marked the first procedural step toward approving compromise legislation to fund the government. A subsequent vote addressing expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits is expected later. Final approval could still take several days if objections arise within the Democratic caucus.

The compromise plan does not ensure the continuation of Affordable Care Act subsidies — a key demand of Senate Democrats for over six weeks. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer joined most Democrats in opposing the motion, with only eight members breaking ranks to support it.

While Senator Cortez Masto supported the Republican-backed bill aimed at reopening the government, the Nevada delegation had been divided earlier. Senator Rosen had previously said her constituents did not elect her to Washington to yield easily to Republican pressure.

“Nevadans did not send me to Washington to cave to Republicans,” Senator Rosen said earlier in the debate.

After weeks of gridlock, mounting financial and social costs from the longest government shutdown in U.S. history pushed lawmakers toward compromise.
