AI threatens to widen inequality among states: UN

The UN Development Programme warns that the rapid deployment of artificial intelligence could trigger a “Next Great Divergence,” widening gaps between developed and developing nations and reversing decades of convergence in global development. The report argues that AI’s impact will be uneven due to disparities in infrastructure, skills, data access, and regulatory frameworks, potentially concentrating benefits in wealthier states while leaving poorer ones behind. Even affluent countries could suffer if poorer regions are not integrated into the AI transition, as inequality could drive security concerns and undocumented migration. Urgent, coordinated policy actions are needed—investments in digital infrastructure, support for open-source AI models, and inclusive global ethical standards—to mitigate a widening global divide.
