In 2022, a broker approached Sethumadhavan's family, who own seven acres in Elappully, Palakkad district, Kerala, with a proposal to buy three acres for a college.
The family agreed to the sale at a lower-than-market rate, thinking it would benefit the community. However, in early 2025, they discovered that the land was actually intended for a liquor company.
"If the company starts operating, I will not be able to cultivate there. It will become a wasteland," said Sethumadhavan.
Local farmers, including Sethumadhavan, are concerned about the impact of the alcohol plant on their livelihood and the environment in water-stressed Palakkad.
