Trump’s Manifest Destiny

Trump's Manifest Destiny

Joe Jackson thinks the current US administration is poised to repeat America's many previous imperial disasters.

US President Donald Trump appears committed to extending America's imperialist legacy and channeling a martial ethos that can be traced back to the Spanish-American War of 1898, when the US "liberated" Cuba and the Philippines from Spanish colonial rule.

If past is prologue, there can be little doubt that it will end badly.

In some parts of the world, the United States' image is defined by resentment. As President Donald Trump embraces a 21st-century iteration of “manifest destiny” (the 19th-century belief that the US was divinely ordained to expand across North America), and seeks political capital in bellicosity, a new wave of global anger may well be coming.

Author's summary: Trump repeats America's imperial disasters.
