Last Orders: Can UK Pubs Be Saved?
Pubs in Britain are closing at a rate of one per day, accelerating a long-term downward trend. The number of pubs closing permanently has reached over one per day for the first time, according to government statistics.
In the first half of 2025, 209 pubs in England and Wales closed forever, which is eight per week, up from six per week last year. Since 2020, 2,283 pubs have vanished from communities across Britain, either demolished or converted to other uses.
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) reports that closures across England, Scotland, and Wales are expected to total 378 this year, resulting in 5,600 job losses.
