Replica of Christopher Columbus' Ship Sinks Off Mexican Coast

A replica of Christopher Columbus' galleon, Marigalante, has sunk off the coast of Mexico after 30 years of serving as a tourist attraction.

The incident occurred near the Buenaventura Hotel in the state of Jalisco as the crew attempted to return to port for technical repairs. According to local media, a critical failure in the bilge pumps caused the ship to take on water, leading to severe flooding.

Efforts to slow the flooding were briefly successful, but ultimately, the structural damage and water weight overcame the vessel's buoyancy, causing it to tilt and lose balance before sinking.

The ship gradually flooded from the inside, with water levels reaching 1.5 meters inside the lower deck.

The sinking of Marigalante is a significant loss for the tourist industry in the region.
