A row has broken out over plans for a £16 million footbridge in Evesham.
Council leaders, looking to cut costs, claim the Hampton Bridge scheme cannot be scrapped for "legal reasons".
"The claim that the council is legally bound to proceed is simply untrue."
Tory councillor Adam Kent argues that no contract to build the bridge has been signed, and therefore, the project is not legally committed. He also claims that delaying the scheme would not automatically trigger the loss or repayment of developer funding.
"The administration's suggestion that this bridge is somehow legally unavoidable is a fabrication,"
said Cllr Kent, calling for transparency and accountability.
Cabinet members, however, insist that the project is not free from "legal, financial, or reputational commitments".
