Asrani was born on January 1, 1941, as Govardhan Asrani and starred in over 350 Bollywood films throughout his five-decade career. He began his film career with Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain (1966) and acted in over 25 films alongside Rajesh Khanna, including Bawarchi (1972), Namak Haraam (1973), and Aap Ki Kasam (1974).
Asrani was known for his collaborations with director Hrishikesh Mukherjee, appearing in films such as Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975), and Mili (1975). He was also famous for his role as the Jailor in Sholay (1975).
