Volunteers, Food Recipients React to SNAP Benefits Potentially Being Cut

More than 274,000 Indiana households receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and experts say a continued government shutdown could impact these families and the food banks that assist them.

BACKGROUND: Millions are at risk of losing food assistance next month if the government shutdown continues.

“So many people coming in,” said Bernard Sinclair, who both receives food and volunteers at Inasmuch Ministry. “More and more and more every day.”

Sinclair has noticed an increase in the number of people in need over the four months he has been at the ministry. The USDA warned earlier this month that a prolonged government shutdown could lead to cuts in SNAP benefits, causing Sinclair to worry.

Author's summary: Government shutdown may cut SNAP benefits.
