Colorado nonprofits are describing the government shutdown as "chaos" and a "scramble to protect the places we love".
Headwaters Trails Alliance Executive Director Meara McQuain had to pull an all-nighter on the eve of the shutdown to submit federal grant proposals before workers were furloughed.
“There’s a lot of scrambling that was happening in the days leading up to the potential shutdown,”
McQuain said, noting that her organization had already scrapped plans for the summer season and cancelled multiple projects due to staffing cuts at the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.
This shutdown has personally impacted McQuain, as she is responsible for writing grants and developing projects and proposals for next year.
