He was declared an ‘official national treasure’ by the Brazilian government to prevent him from moving overseas, with top clubs like Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester United, and Real Madrid trying to sign him.
Pele was born Edson, named after Thomas Edison, and was nicknamed 'Dico' by his family and 'Pele' in school due to his mispronunciation of Brazilian goalkeeper, Bile.
His father, Dondinho, was a lower-league footballer.
