Chronic Hand Eczema Affects 1 in 10 U.S. Adults

A recent study presented at the 2025 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference in Las Vegas reveals that 1 in 10 U.S. adults have physician-diagnosed chronic hand eczema.

Chronic hand eczema (CHE) is defined as hand eczema that lasts for more than three months or relapses twice or more within a year.

“These highly powered survey results provide compelling evidence that chronic hand eczema (or CHE) is a common skin disease in the United States,”

said Raj Chovatiya, M.D., Ph.D., the lead investigator of the CHECK study. The study, conducted by LEO Pharma, shows a higher prevalence of CHE in the U.S. compared to Canada and Europe, where a similar study reported a prevalence of 5%.

The CHECK (Chronic Hand Eczema epidemiology Care, and Knowledge) study is the first to quantify the prevalence of chronic hand eczema.

Author's summary: Chronic hand eczema affects 10% of U.S. adults.
