Strong Earthquake Hits Hokkaido
A strong earthquake struck eastern areas of Hokkaido Prefecture on Saturday, with authorities urging vigilance for potential aftershocks.
The quake had an estimated magnitude of 5.8 and measured a lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in the city of Nemuro. It occurred at a depth of about 40 kilometers off the southeastern coast of the Nemuro Peninsula in Hokkaido.
According to the Meteorological Agency,
there was no threat of tsunami, but people in affected areas were advised to remain alert for more temblors measuring up to a lower 5 for about a week.
The earthquake occurred at the boundary of two plates, where an ocean plate is subducting beneath a land plate, off the southeastern coast of Hokkaido.
