Approximately 26,000 people in Schuylkill face the loss of food stamps due to the federal shutdown.
Leslie Barringer, a 64-year-old Pottsville woman, relies on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and a local food pantry. After being forced to retire early due to cancer, she now receives $23 monthly from SNAP, which she uses to buy essentials like bread, margarine, and eggs.
“It helps,”
she said, acknowledging that the amount may not seem significant, but it makes a difference in her monthly meals.
The federal shutdown is likely to put the SNAP program on hold nationwide, affecting many individuals like Barringer who depend on it.
