A group of computer engineers in Milan created a database called Beyond, gathering private and damaging information about Italy's political elite to control them.
The platform compiled hundreds of thousands of records from state databases, including financial transactions and criminal investigations, to create detailed profiles on politicians and business leaders.
The dossiers gave them the power to "screw over all of Italy," according to someone identified as Samuele Calamucci, the technical mastermind of the group, in police wiretaps.
