Thousands of international students' scholarship contracts to be tightened after ELTE scandal

International Students' Scholarship Contracts to be Tightened

Following the recent scandal at ELTE, thousands of international students in Hungary may face tightened scholarship contracts.

A lecture by historian Alexander Yakobson from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was disrupted on October 16, when security forces failed to restore order, resulting in the suspension of his lecture.

The incident began when some students attending the lecture wore keffiyehs and shouted that the lecture was political propaganda supporting Israeli genocide, causing a disturbance that neither the lecturer, attendees, nor university security could calm.

The lecture series, titled "Diverzitás és demokrácia az izraeli társadalomban", is still available on ELTE's website, although only two of the three sessions could be attended online due to the disruption.

Two ministers and the university rector have demanded accountability in response to the incident.

Author's summary: ELTE scandal affects international students.
