The 29th Alaska Bald Eagle Festival will take place in Haines in early November, attracting raptor enthusiasts.
Registrations for the event are slow, according to organizers. The Chilkat Valley is home to one of North America's largest congregations of bald eagles, due to a late chum salmon run.
The area's unique geography, with warm water from the Tsirku River flowing into the Chilkat River, prevents freezing and allows fish to spawn late into the season, drawing eagles and visitors.
The festival, scheduled for Nov. 7-9, is a collaborative effort between local organizations, including the Haines Visitor's Center, Alaska Bald Eagle Foundation, and the Chamber of Commerce.
